Choosing the Right Treatment
You have several choices when it comes to teeth whitening. The recommendation given to any patient is to opt for some type of professional treatment, whether it is a professional service done in the office or an at home product that is prepared for you. The over-the-counter kits are typically not recommended, but if you do wish to use them, it is best to consult with a professional first to determine the best one for your needs.
How it Works
There are two types of stains that you can have on your teeth: extrinsic and intrinsic. The difference lies in where the stains are located. Those that are on the external part of the enamel are extrinsic and those that get into the nooks and crannies of your teeth are intrinsic and difficult to eliminate, but not impossible. When you opt for in office treatment, a whitening gel is applied to your teeth that gets through the enamel and to the discoloration. The time that it takes to eliminate the stains depends on the level of the stains and their type.
After the Treatment
After you have professional teeth whitening completed, you will be requested to avoid certain foods, including black coffee, tea, soda and any dark berries. It is also recommended that you avoid smoking because the enamel of your teeth is very open to staining immediately following the procedure. Smoking and eating or drinking of any dark or staining products should be withheld for 24-48 hours.
